About
Uniform Patrol
The Uniform Patrol Division is the largest Division
in the Police Department. There are approximately 150+ officers assigned, when
fully staffed.
Uniform Patrol is generally acknowledged as the backbone
of the Police Department and the division that is most judged by terms of its
performance. The City of South Bend, with it's population of 102,000 residents,
encompasses a large geographical area. The City is separated into 20 patrol beats
that cover the 520 miles of streets and an additional 499 miles of alleys.
Patrols
are provided around the clock. In addition to the 20 patrol beat cars staffed,
each region (4 in total) has at least one extra patrol car assigned to assist
beat cars in that region, in addition to K9 officers, supervisors, and traffic/or
specialty unit cars. These numbers ensure a timely response and patrol coverage
throughout the city.
