SBPD Operations/Unit Overview

The members of the South Bend Police Department are dedicated to the advancement of community policing and the development of a partnership with our citizens. In this section, you will find an overview of the department and each section or units' function.

  • TURF- (Tactical Urban Response Force) Tactical Unit

    Formed in 2005, the TURF Team- formerly our Rapid Response Team (RRT)- is the newest specialty unit of the SBPD. This unit, designed for response to civil unrest, protesting disruptions, or other urban large scale disturbances, is comprised currently of 20 members.

    The TURF Team is to be utilized in the response to acts of civil unrest and situations where events involving large crowds or gatherings resulting in unlawful acts being committed, or where unrest threatens public safety and damage to private and/or government property.

    The TURF Team provides an organized and professional response with the goal of establishing and maintaining order for the safety of citizens and emergency response personnel.Many members are specialty trained through the federal Department of Homeland Security in areas of Civil Unrest, Mass Arrest and Crowd Control, Protestor Device Control, and Chemical Munitions and Deployment.
