The South Bend Police Department divides the city up into regional patrol areas, referred to as "beats". There are four regions (Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest). In addition to the beats shown, each region is assigned additional patrol cars ("X cars") to assist the beat patrol units with additional manpower to patrol area coverage. The specific number of X cars varies depending upon several factors.

Certain shifts will also utilize citywide cars that assist on calls, and may be assigned specific duties (traffic, crime scene technicians, etc).
