    SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS PROGRAM

The School Resource Officer (SRO) program was started in South Bend in 1997 through a Federal Grant. Through this grant we have a Police Officer assigned to all of South Bend's High Schools. A major role for the SRO is to bridge the gap between the students and those in authority, especially police officers. These officers work towards building a trust between the student and him/herself which leads to a positive attitude towards all law enforcement. The SRO is used in many capacities while in the school setting.

They make reports of crimes that happen within the school boundaries, do follow-up investigations when needed and also make arrests when the situation warrants such action. They go into the classrooms and present students with valuable information pertaining to drugs, gangs, peer pressure, self esteem, conflict resolution and any other topic which presents itself as a concern of young people.

In 2004 the program was increaded to include placement of SROs in all local SBCSC intermediate (middle) schools. There are four officers that work full time providing coverage of these schools also.

If you would like to find out more information about the program you can contact one of the SRO's at their school through the information listed below. (updated 9/09)
